Not the way my wife wanted to be introduced to that new teenage driver... had her license for a whole 3 weeks!!! :( (not my wife)
A little duct tape to seal up the new opening on the top edge of the door. It's a wet weekend!
forgot to grab a pic but the folds inside the bottom edge are crease too.
can't tell if the wheel itself tookany damage but the alignment is definitely off. Top of the tire tilts in.
couple questions:
This is an insurance job. I think the local VW dealer farms out their bodywork so I don't have a big incentive to bring it there, do I? Their service department has always taken good care of us. With 95,000 on the odometer, last time it was in they all commented on how food condition it was in... So I might let them have it anyway. Thoughts?
The stability light on the dash was on for a few minutes immediately following the bump. It's gone off. Any concerns? Or just let VW scan it?
Guesses on repair cost? I'm thinking $3500-ish. Save the manual wagons! (It's an '08) (edit - I know it's an insurance job so who really cares - just guessing for fun)
My 5yo who was in the car keeps telling me how fun it was! My wife is not as amused.
Girl was pulling out of her driveway onto a residential street and watching traffic to her right. Forgot to look left again after the oncoming car passed. My wife was on the left and saw that this girl wasn't looking but didn't have anyplace to go when she pulled out. Rookie mistake, hard lesson. No injuries. My wife felt bad for the girl, kid was petrified.
My biggest fear is not being around or able to help when something like this happens... It's a bad phone call that starts with "what information do you need to exchange after an accident?"...
edit - extra question - can any body shop scan the VW stability/ESC system? Or would I have a body shop work on it, then bring it to VW for a full electronics check?

Sweet, the Ding King! Hell I'll just call Dent Wizard while I'm at it. I'm sure they can fix the alignment at the same time.

My guess: $6800

Certainly more than that. I got in a 10 - 15 mph crash with my mother's volvo and caused $8000 of damage to the front of her car. I'm going to guess $7500 or so. It looks like you're going to need a new door, rocker, rear quarter is going to need to be repaired, maybe a new rim (?), and there is probably some structural stuff that needs fixed too. That's a lot of labor cost.

You'd be surprised what it'll cost. My neighbor backed into my parked GTI (another VW so similar costs I'd imagine) a couple years ago. The only damage was a dent in the passenger side front fender, nothing mechanical or electrical was damaged. Repair cost was over 1k. New OEM fender+paint blending into door and bumper. Looks like you'll need a new door and rim plus whatever else you can't see. The rear panel should be repairable without replacement. Id guess 6k.

I guess I'm out of touch on bodywork pricing! I figured new door, everything else looks repairable to me. I'm not sure how the alignment will be fixed. If the upper part of the suspension is pushed in I could see the costs going up even more.

$3600 for the bodywork alone. I got hit in the same spot in my VW and just picked my car up yesterday. The door will be replaced as an entire unit.
As for the suspension and electronics that's a wild ass guess.

If that rocker got fucked up you could be looking at quite a chunk of change to fix this. They'd probably have to replace the door if it is twisted enough for the rain to leak in.

I don't think it will unless it has frame damage. What kind of car hit it anyway?

Yeah I'm sure the door will need replacing. The gap at the top was over an inch wide at the back. The rocker definitely has a spot where it was pushed in and creased a little, but it didn't look like much. I should have taken a picture before taping the door shut but I didn't want it to get too wet inside so I had to work fast...
I'm worried about the rear suspension. The wheel alignment is definitely off, I don't know if it's just bent control arms and such or if the body where the strut or control arm attaches got screwed up too. That would make it a lot worse on the bill.

It was a Honda Odyssey minivan, pulling forward out of a driveway on a downhill into the street so the front bumper was very low.

This is sounding pretty spendy. What's the book value on her anyways?

Somewhere between $8 and $11K depending which site you look it up on. I don't think I can find an exact replacement though. Very hard to find with the MT.

Anyone know what year they stopped selling Passat Wagons in the US?

It could very easily get over 8k so just prepare yourself to be finding a replacement.

dubs are expensive unfortunately. this was $5000, although they threw in a rental. i guess it depends on weather the door interworkings are messed up, that was what screwed me over when this tree hit me (!!!)
